The Day My Miracle Dog Saved My Life

The Day My Miracle Dog Saved My Life

Sarahi Gonzalez

On March 15, 2026, I was walking my dog Lukie in my apartment complex. I was turning the corner when out of nowhere a giant aggressive dog came from behind us. Lukie stood between us and barked at the dog to defend me. It happened so fast! Before I knew it, the dog picked up Lukie by the mouth and played with him like a toy. I was absolutely horrified. It was a nightmare!

I quickly pulled the leash in complete panic. The dog grabbed Lukie again and bit into him. I cried out in complete mortification as I heard Lukie’s screams of pain. Somehow, I managed to get a hold of him on the floor. I had my arms wrapped around him trying to grab him to pick him up while the dog kept coming back attempting to grab my dog. Lukie was resisting because his animal instincts were telling him to run away. I knew if he did, the dog would get a hold of him and kill him. So I tried to grab him and cover him with my arms while he tried to bite me to get away in fear. He didn’t realize I was trying to protect him too.

I managed to somehow get up with Lukie in my arms. My leg was caught on his leash. It has somehow gotten fully tangled on my leg. I had no choice but to drag my foot as I limped away. I was in complete fear and panic, I couldn’t think straight. I continued to cry and scream at the dog to leave us alone. It was an absolute miracle that this dog never touched me and simply left. I went up a short flight of stairs that seemed like eternity. An old woman heard my cries and led me to sit on her balcony.

I held Lukie with blood all over us. I couldn’t see where I was injured but she instructed me to clean my bloody face. At this point I was having a panic attack and couldn’t get words out. I just cried and tried to say, “I don’t know what do. I need to help Lukie.” All I could think about was him. He was crying and still trying to get out of my arms.

The neighbor let me go through her house which led to my apartment unit on the other side. I ran as fast as I could with Lukie in my arms. I got home and yelled for my roommate. I let Lukie into my room and sobbed on the floor as my housemates comforted me. One of them instructed me to clean my face, change and call the vet. The Lord helped me become sober-minded in order to make sure Lukie received what he needed.

At the vet, they shaved Lukie’s back to see how many wound he had. Earlier, he had so much fur I could only see two wounds. To my horror, when they brought him back, he had wounds all over his back and his side. Even worse, they informed me of a hernia that had been formed. The dog had destroyed the wall and muscles where his organs were on his side. His intestines were out of place and he would need surgery.

There was a risk of death because they had to leave him overnight but no one would be able to attend him. I was also informed of a risk of death during or after surgery. I sobbed hysterically in that small room. I felt so defeated and helpless. I blamed myself in that moment. I cried out to God and prayed for a miracle.

That day I saw the gospel of Jesus Christ poured out through my friends. They dropped everything and came to my aid. They took care of me, fed me, prayed for me, sang to me, and slept over so I wouldn’t feel alone. I was surrounded by the love of God.

That night I was tormented by the memories of Lukie being in that dog’s mouth. It was absolutely horrifying! A sight no one should ever have to witness. I prayed for him all night. In the morning, I called and was relieved to hear that Lukie had survived the night.

That morning I went to the prayer room. As soon as I walked in, my friend was singing a song about miracles. The following songs were about being safe in the shadow of his wings (Psalm 91) which the Lord had spoken to me so many times in the previous weeks. I felt comforted by God as I received the phone call that Lukie was going into surgery. I warred in the Spirit for his life. People prayed for me in faith, believing for breakthrough. A few hours later, I went home and received another phone call from the vet. Lukie had a successful surgery! There was a risk of infection but he did so well. In that moment, I praised the Lord for the miracle gift he had given me. The following day, I was able to bring Lukie home on his 7th birthday!

It’s been 4 days since the attack. Lukie is recovering better than expected! And so am I. Because of God’s sovereignty to keep me safe, I am able to take care of Lukie while I am on Spring break from school.

Lukie is not just a dog. He was there when I was chronically depressed, anxious, newly sober, and suicidal. Through every difficult moment of my life and every joyful adventure, Lukie has never left my side. God used him to heal me and show me what His unconditional love looks like through this beautiful little dog. I love him more than you can imagine.

Now, I have received an even deeper revelation of Jesus through Lukie’s sacrifice that day. Lukie was willing to give his life for me and fearlessly defend me from that dog. He became the lamb who was slain in that moment to lay His life down so that I wouldn’t be touched and could live. The wounds on his back and his side reminded me of Jesus on the cross.

In that moment, no one else was there that day when I was getting attacked. It was just Jesus. God has been nothing but faithful throughout this process. Lukie and I are alive because of God’s hand that protects. He saved our lives and I am eternally grateful. It is truly a miracle.

If you feel led to sow into this story of resilience you can do so here.
