15 Sneaky Lies That Fuel Procrastination and Keep You From God's Purpose
God is your loving Father who wants the best for you. Simultaneously He is also God, who honors diligence, order, and discipline. The following are lies that Satan will use to keep you trapped in the prison of procrastination and God’s truth that covers a multitude of sins with His love.
1. You’re not ready yet.
Satan’s Lie: The enemy says that you need to be more qualified, experience or knowledgeable before taking action. He will make you feel like you are not equipped for the call on your life. He will discourage you from taking a step forward in faith and hinder you from being obedient to the Lord. He will speak into your ear that you will never be ready.
God’s Truth: And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19).
Love Note: Throughout the Bible, the Lord calls the unprepared and equips them for every battle they face. Whether it was David who had victory over Goliath (1 Samuel 17) or Esther who was resilience, bringing her people to freedom from the snare of the enemy (Book of Esther), God will never let you fight without first giving you the tools you need to succeed.
2. Someone else can do it better.
Satan’s Lie: This lie creates self-doubt and discourages us from believing in God’s unique purpose for us. Bitterness, envy, fear, and comparison will be embedded into your heart and mind through this lie that encourages you to look at someone else instead of Jesus.
God’s Truth: Consider now, for the Lord has chosen you to build a house as the sanctuary. Be strong and do the work (1 Chronicles 28:10).
Love Note: God has given each of us a unique calling and gifts. There is no one else who is equipped and called to accomplish the specific assignment you have on your life. Jesus has chosen you and only you to do the work He has called you to do. No one else can reach the same people you can. God designed each of us for a specific purpose.
3. You have plenty of time.
Satan’s Lie: Procrastination often comes from the illusion that there’s no urgency. But this mindset can keep us stuck, postponing God’s calling.
God’s Truth: Sluggards do not plow in season; so at harvest time they look but find nothing (Proverbs 20:4).
Love Note: God is a holy and righteous God who is merciful but desires obedience. He will not always wait for you to do His will. If you are not willing to do what He is asking of you, He will find someone else to accomplish the task and use their unique gifts for His kingdom. There is redemption and He gives numerous chances for us to walk in obedience, but if we continuously rebel against His commands, He will use a willing person. We need to take His will seriously. God has asked us to be ambassadors for His kingdom and to bring people to Him. He also has given us responsibilities such as being a parent, student, employee or other roles and it is up to us to be good stewards of our time.
3. You don’t have enough resources.
Satan’s Lie: The enemy wants us to focus on limitations, like finances, time, or support, to make us believe that God’s purpose can’t be fulfilled right now. He will instill fear, anxiety, or depression when things don’t work out the way we need them to. Satan can infiltrate your mind with a lack mindset until you are physically, mentally, and spiritually depleted.
God’s Truth: For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light (Colossians 1:9-12).
Love Note: God is our ultimate Provider. He supplies what we need to accomplish His will. He send us people, gives us experiences, and takes us to places where we can find the abundance that He has for us. The body of Christ is always praying for you to be filled with all of His fruit so that you may grow in all areas of you life. You have full access to heaven. All you have to do is ask your heavenly Father and He will give you what you need.
5. People will judge or reject you.
Satan’s Lie: Fear of rejection and judgment can keep us from stepping out in faith. The enemy tries to create anxiety around obedience to God’s will, but God calls us to live for His approval, not the world’s. Fear of man is a powerful weapon that Satan uses to keep you trapped in a state of despair and inaction.
God’s Truth: I pray that your partnership with us in the faith may be effective in deepening your understanding of every good thing we share for the sake of Christ (Philemon 1:6).
Love Note: You are surrounded by people who want to partner with you to fulfill God’s mandate for your life. God has not given us a spirit of fear but a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). You have people who truly care about your well-being and desire to see you be effective in everything you do.
6. You’ll fail, so don’t even try.
Satan’s Lie: The enemy loves to sow seeds of doubt and fear of failure. He will tell you that it’s better to only do the things you’re good at and not try anything new.
God’s Truth: With this in mind, we constantly pray for you, that our God may make you worthy of his calling, and that by his power he may bring to fruition your every desire for goodness and your every deed prompted by faith (2 Thessalonians 1:11).
Love Note: God calls us to trust Him with the outcome, knowing that He can turn even our mistakes into something good. He doesn’t want us to be afraid of challenges. Instead, He encourages us to take risks with Him as we partner with His Spirit to accomplish His will. He will give us power through the Holy Spirit to succeed.
7. It’s too hard or will take too long.
Satan’s Lie: The enemy tries to make us focus on the difficulty or length of the task. He wants us to put things off and be distracted from the tasks the Lord desires for us to accomplish.
God’s Truth: May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us— yes, establish the work of our hands (Psalm 90:17).
Love Note: God gives us strength and endurance for His work. When we rely on Him, He enables us to do what seems impossible. His Spirit rests on us and gives us power to accomplish all that He has for us. He will establish your hands to work and your mind to create so that you can transform the world for His glory.
8. You’ll have more time once things settle down.
Satan’s Lie: This lie encourages a cycle of postponement, waiting for a perfect season that may never come.
God’s Truth: For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose (Philippians 2:13).
Love Note: Unfortunately we live in an unpredictable world. The Lord doesn’t always reveal to us what is going to happen and when circumstances will change. Therefore, we can’t base our productivity on seasons. God often calls us to step out in the middle of our messy, busy lives, trusting Him to manage the details. We may never reach the “perfect” moment to take action but we can trust that every time we step out in faith, God will meet us there and guide us through every challenge we face.
9. You need to wait until you’re perfect.
Satan’s Lie: The enemy can make us feel unworthy or like we need to be sinless before stepping into our calling.
God’s Truth: All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work (2 Timothy 3:16-17).
Love Note: God uses broken and imperfect people. He never asked for you to be perfect begin you begin the work He has called you to do. There are countless example such as Gideon who was filled with fear but stepped into the field to action in obedience to God. We can’t allow imposter syndrome to hinder us from walking in power through the Spirit and His Word. God chose you before time, so there is nothing that He believes you won’t be able to overcome.
10. It doesn’t really matter that much.
Satan’s Lie: Minimizing the importance of God’s calling is a subtle but powerful way the enemy discourages obedience.
God’s Truth: Many are the plans in a person's heart, but it is the LORD's purpose that prevails (Proverbs 19:21).
Love Note: Every act of obedience, no matter how small, has eternal significance in God’s plan. God’s mandate to reach the nations and build His kingdom is not to be taken lightly. We are not here on this earth for our own selfish desires. We are here for God’s name to be renown and His glory to meet people from every corner of the earth. Therefore, we can’t ignore the call on our lives. God’s purpose for our lives matters more than anything else.
11. You’re not hearing God clearly.
Satan’s Lie: This lie keeps us second-guessing God’s guidance, keeping us in a state of indecision.
God’s Truth: The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice (John 10:3-4).
Love Note: God often speaks in still, small ways, and He calls us to step out in faith even if the path isn’t fully clear. If you are a born-again believer, you know God’s voice and are part of His flock. You don’t have to worry about signs and wonders being the only way you experience God. He will show up in the stillness and mundane parts of your day.
12. It’s just too late; you’ve missed your chance.
Satan’s Lie: The enemy tries to make us believe that past mistakes or delays have disqualified us from fulfilling God’s purpose.
God’s Truth: But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance (2 Peter 3:8-9).
Love Note: But God redeems time and offers fresh starts, using every experience to shape us for His work. Even when you make mistakes, He will always be merciful to redirect you onto the straight and narrow road. Whatever opportunities are missed, He will redeem and bring forth new ones that are filled with His abundant grace.
13. God doesn’t want your help.
Satan’s Lie: Satan will tell you that God doesn’t care whether you are part of God’s plans of restoration.
God’s Truth: With all wisdom and understanding, 9he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, 10to be put into effect when the times reach their fulfillment—to bring unity to all things in heaven and on earth under Christ (Ephesians 1:8b-10).
Love Note: God has chosen each of us for a unique role that no one else can fill in quite the same way. God may not need your help but He greatly desires to make you a part of His strategy for building His kingdom. God didn’t have to bring us into His plans at all but He is so gracious that He decided to included all of humanity who believe in Him, to be a part of His greater story of love and redemption.
14. Wait until you feel like it.
Satan’s Lie: The enemy often encourages us to rely on fleeting emotions rather than faithfulness and obedience. But obedience to God is about commitment, not convenience.
God’s Truth: Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding (Proverbs 3:5).
Love Note: Our hearts are deceitful and can’t be trusted (Jeremiah 17:9). We must not rely on our feelings but instead on the Word of God that is truth. There are times when you are not going to feel like doing something important. Use the word of God to exhort your spirit to listen to the authority of the Word and take every thought captive and command it to bow to the name of Jesus. God is a merciful yet loving Father who disciplines His children for their benefit. Don’t run from the chastening of God. Honor Him as He leads you toward purpose.
15. You can’t handle it.
Satan’s Lie: The enemy may convince us that the task is too overwhelming or that we’re incapable of handling it. He will put the pressure on you so that you won’t lean on God’s strength but instead focus on yourself.
God’s Truth: And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work (2 Corinthians 9:8).
Love Note: God promises to be with us and provide the strength we need to endure. You are capable of achieving anything the Lord puts on your heart. You have the mind of Christ which means you have access to the thoughts of God. He can help you through any situation. You just have to work with Him to overcome your circumstance. With God, all things are possible, so lean on Him and you will get through it (Matthew 19:26)
Conclusion
The enemy will attempt to deceive, destroy, and discourage the plans that God has for you. Every lie aims to keep you passive, inactive, and out of alignment with God’s purpose. However, God has already given us the victory through His Son Jesus on the Cross. He took procrastination to the grave and gave you resurrection power to confront the lies holding you back from living in the fullness of what God has for you. Challenge these lies with the truth of God’s Word. Step boldly into your purpose and allow God to give you the confidence in Christ that you need.
